Foveated observation of shape and motion

چکیده
Robotic navigation and interaction frequently require that the shape and motion of external objects and events be observed. Many interesting events occur at mixed scales. Subtle localized shape and motion often occurs together with long range movements. One of the chief challenges in recovering these events is to obtain high resolution imagery suitable for resolving small details, while simultaneously increasing the working volume in which recovery is possible. This paper proposes an architecture for mixed scale motion recovery. Robust coverage of a large working volume is provided by a wide area tracking system. This system localizes interesting motions, and guides a separate foveated system of pantilt cameras to observe the detailed event at high resolution. We demonstrate two applications, foveated structured light scanning and the capture of muscle deformation while walking. Both applications allow subtle detailed recovery that would not be possible using existing single scale systems.

Motion Estimation and Compensation for Foveated Video
Utilizing the nonuniform resolution property of the human visual system, foveated video can provide high visual quality relative to non-foveated video by allocating more bits to the central foveation area. In this paper, we present a motion estimation and compensation algorithm for foveated video and measure the performance using a new measure of visual delity termed foveal mean absolute distor...

This paper explores the problem of communicating high-quality, foveated video streams in real time. Foveated video exploits the nonuniform resolution of the human visual system by preferentially allocating bits according to proximity to assumed visual xation points, thus delivering perceptually high quality at greatly reduced bandwidths. Foveated video streams possess speci c data density prope...

متن کاملDerivation of Equation of Motion for the Pillow-Shape Seismic Base Isolation System
Rolling-based seismic isolation systems, in which rollers of circular or non-circular section are used, are less expensive and easier to manufacture. However, this type of isolation suffers from either lack of restoring or re-centering capability, or weakness against uplift forces. To resolve the first shortcoming the use of elliptical as well as pillow-shape rolling parts has been suggested, a...
متن کاملMotion Estimation and Compensation of H.263 Video via Foveation
The human visual system (HVS) samples the external world non-uniformly. Utilizing this property in video compression, more bits can be allocated around the point of xation, i.e. the foveation point, to produce low bit rate foveated video. For the same bit rate, foveated video will have higher subjective quality compared to unfoveated video for a single observer. Utilizing the foveation property...
